De-inking paper is becoming a popular discussion point within the green printing industry, it has been reported.
Gail Nickel-Kailing, writing for What They Think, notes it is no longer enough to simply print documents on recycled paper, but that each printed piece should also be recyclable.
She explains at the 2008 industry event Drupa, de-inking of digitally printed paper was a "hot potato".
But this is not the only much discussed issue in the field of green printing.
Ms Nickel-Kailing also pointed to sustainable initiatives such as recovering and re-using toner waste which is generated while manufacturing or using any toner that cannot be recovered to combine with wood pulp and use as fuel.
Meanwhile, toner could also be shipped in recyclable bottles, while even the heat produced in the toner manufacturing process could be recovered and used to heat a building.
A recent article on eucommerz advised green printing initiatives such as duplexing could see companies lessening their harmful impact on the environment and also saving money.
